Clear aligners have made straightening teeth something adults actually look forward to. No brackets, no wires, and most people won't even notice you're wearing them. Here's what you should know before you start.

How clear aligners work

Clear aligners are a series of thin, custom-made plastic trays. Each set is shaped slightly differently from the last, so every new tray moves your teeth a tiny step closer to their final position. You switch to a new set about every one to two weeks, and your teeth follow the plan.

It all starts with a quick 3D scan of your teeth. No goopy impression trays. From that scan, your dentist maps out each movement and shows you a 3D preview of your new smile before you commit.

Expect a little pressure for a day or two with each new set. That's a sign they're working, and it fades quickly.

How long does it take?

It depends on how much your teeth need to move. Minor cases can finish in about six months, while more involved cases may take a year or more. Your 3D plan gives you a clear estimate before you start.

Keeping your results

Teeth naturally want to drift back. After treatment you'll wear a retainer, usually at night, to keep your new smile in place for good. It's the easiest part of the whole process.
